Greetings from the Hilltop!

Informally, the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) calls it “six weeks that will stay with you for the rest of your life.” Officially, they call it RISD Pre-College, a six-week program for motivated high-school students that combines foundation studies in all realms of visual and conceptual art with the residential experience of college life. This year some 450 students are enrolled, alongside an award-winning faculty of more than 50 artists, designers and educators. Lexi Sinskey ’18 is in the middle of it, hard at work on her major, Film & Video. She enjoys a solid background in the field having taken the introductory course “Documentary Video” offered by art teacher Ray Woishek ’89 here at St. George’s last spring. On Tuesday evening Lexi was visited on RISD's Providence campus by her advisor, Interim Director of Advancement Susie Keller (right).

As August comes knocking on the door and July slips into the past, activity on campus marks the prelude to a new academic year at St. George’s. On the faculty front, new faces appear, sporadically at first. This week’s sighting was Alexander “Zander” Jones, who will teach history, work in the Deans Office, coach varsity soccer and baseball, and preside as dorm head in Diman Hall. Credentials include a B.A. from Ohio Wesleyan University, an M.S. from Ohio University, and recent tenure as Dean of Students at Salisbury School. Zander’s connection to St. George’s already is well established, as his father Jeremiah W. Jones was a member of SG’s Class of 1970. And, it doesn’t stop there. Zander has two uncles with Dragon affiliations—George Gebelein ’73, P’08,’10,’11, and Dana Jones ’61—and a grandfather, the late Arthur Jones ’31.

In what has become a rite of summer, members of the Alumni Office and Advancement staff welcomed Anne Wynne-Willson, wife of the late Michael Wynne-Willson ’37, P’73, to lunch yesterday in Newport. The custom originated years ago when she and Michael took it upon themselves to create an elaborate picnic on behalf of what was then the Development Office and bring the spread to St. George’s every summer. It started out as an afternoon on the rocks above Second Beach, morphed into a lawn event on Cliff Field, and ended up more formally on Sixth Form Porch. The clincher? Anne’s proprietary homemade iced tea. This year the venue was in town at The Mooring restaurant, but the feelings were all there, as were fond memories of Michael. Above, Anne (second from right) is flanked by (left to right) Advancement staffers Emmy Sullivan, Linda Michalek, and Quentin Warren, and Director of Alumni Relations Bill Douglas.

When you least expect it, all of a sudden, there’s a Dragon. SG Events Coordinator Ann Weston was watching the Democratic National Convention on TV earlier this week when she happened upon a familiar face in a television pan of the convention hall floor. With a lightning strike to the pause button, she froze the image just in time to capture this shot of Massachusetts Democratic National Committee member and Delegate Augustus “Gus” Bickford ’82 along with fellow members of the Bay State delegation as they took in the proceedings (right). A lot of red, white and blue in this lively portrayal of the U.S. electoral process at work! Gus was joined on the floor by another member of the Class of 1982, Katie Merrill.

Congratulations to the winner of last week’s trivia question, Sarah Coffin ’06, who was the first to identify the location in the photo—the door leading into Old School from West Steps. Thank you to all who replied. Try again!
