Greetings from the Hilltop!

More than 100 alumni, parents, faculty, staff and friends attended our reception last night at Greenvale Vineyards in Portsmouth, R.I., hosted by Greenvale owner Nancy Parker Wilson ’77 (right with Marian Royer P’09). Against a stunning vineyard backdrop just before sunset, community members gathered to mingle, reconnect and enthusiastically kick off the school year. It was the first reception of many to be held throughout the 2016-17 year — the last year at St. George’s for Head of School Eric Peterson and his wife, Senior Associate Director of Admission Krista Peterson. Eric told those gathered that today’s school is stronger than ever — and that he was heartened by the independent investigator’s endorsement of St. George’s in 2016 as “state-of-the-art” and where a culture of respect was clearly evident. “We keep our students safe and well and healthy so that they have a chance to grow into the future contributors to society they will become,” he said. He and Krista have been “humbled to be a part of this extraordinary institution” and will savor their final months on the Hilltop, making every moment count. “St. George’s,” he said, "has meant more to me than anywhere I’ve ever been.” Photos from the reception are on our page.

School spirit will surely be at a high tonight as the girls' varsity soccer team and Coach Ray Woishek ’89 take on Marianapolis Prep at 6:30 p.m. Our annual fall “Friday Night Lights” game, the matchup is sure to attract face-painted fans in droves. Before the game the BBQ Club, headed by sixth-formers Christine Dejoux (daughter of Ed Dejoux ’86), Eric Durudogan, Chase Holding and Dillon Kaynor, will be sparking its grills for the first time this school year. Go Dragons!

The annual Honor Code Chapel took place yesterday, during which every student recited the pledge to adhere to the code and signed the Honor Book (right). Members of the Honor Board — Chair Chase Hedlund ’17, Shane Conlon ’17, Eric Durudogan ’17, Charlotte Grunebaum ’17 and Dillon Kaynor ’17 — presided over the ceremony. The Italian leather-bound book the students sign was donated by the school prefects in 2009Galimah Baysah ’09, S.J. Tilden ’09, Izzy Evans ’09, Campbell McNichol ’09 and Carmen Boscia ’09 — and now sits in a case in the front hall of Old School. Head of School Eric Peterson signed the book on behalf of the faculty.

Dragons in college
Field hockey standout Katelyn Hutchinson ’14 (right), now a junior at Kenyon College, scored her fourth goal of the season in the Ladies' 5-0 victory over Oberlin this week. Watch Katelyn’s post game interview here.

Congratulations to last week’s trivia contest winner, Meade Thayer ’70, who knew that his classmate Bill Buell ’70 was a member of the Broadway cast of “Cyrano de Bergerac.”

This week’s trivia question: Yesterday, for “Throwback Thursday” on our Facebook page, we featured a photo of Arden Hall dormitory, built in 1907. What other campus building was built in 1907? The first to respond with the correct answer wins a coupon code for $10 off a purchase from the St. George's bookstore.
