Marcy Kelly is the singer and leader of the band Sugar, which performed at St. George’s recent Winter Formal, but before the show, Kelly spoke to students and faculty on campus about what it’s like to run a small business.
Almost a dozen students and faculty members attended Kelly’s talk in the Davenport Room at the Nathaniel P. Hill Library on Jan. 25.
Kelly gave attendees a tour of the band’s website and highlighted the importance of marketing on digital mediums like social media compared to print, like when the band formed over 15 years ago.
“When we first started out… being online was a huge thing, but now it’s just everything,” Kelly said. “We barely do anything advertising other than just having an online presence. We no longer have to do advertising in print.”
As bandleader, Kelly also manages the group’s budget and payroll as well as logistics for its performances.
“For me, it’s wearing all the different hats,” Kelly said when asked what the most difficult part of her job is. “I always say getting to the gig and doing the gig, that’s the easy part for me… it’s all of the other logistics and finding a balance and trying not to get too stressed out.”
Kelly’s advice to students interested in starting a small business was to do a lot of research.“Don’t be afraid to just get in there and do it and try it and figure it out as you go along because that’s what we did with this,” said Kelly.
