The spring sports season is over and athletes have left the Hilltop either for the summer or to begin their college sport careers. Before they departed, Dragon athletes were recognized at Prize Assembly on May 27 and the Spring Athletic Awards were given out.

“The hum and clang of front diggers, trucks, and other machines outside the window of the athletic office all spring has made this season one of excitement for the future,” Athletic Director Rachel Horn said of ongoing construction for two new artificial turf athletic fields. “The amount of spirit and resilience the spring teams exhibited this spring was unmatched. Wins and losses, exciting comebacks, and heart wrenching one point losses. There is no doubt that we have made progress. Step by step, we will all continue to improve and grow as individual athletes and coaches, as teams, as citizens.”

Among the spring sports season highlights, SG retained the Diman Cup for the 16th year in a row. The sailing team traveled to San Diego in the final days of the season to compete for the Baker Trophy, placing ninth. The girls’ track team placed third out of 24 teams at the New England Preparatory School Track Association championship while Maddy Tregenza took first in the discus throw and Irem Tural placed first in high jump. The boys’ track team placed 12th at the same meet. Senior tennis player George Shepherd placed fourth in the New England Preparatory School Invitational Tennis Tournament.

The season’s Most Valuable Players were John Baldwin for golf; Peyton Mulhern for girls’ lacrosse; Matt Toner for boys’ lacrosse; Rachel Smithie for girls’ tennis; George Shepherd for boys’ tennis; Hailey Martin for softball; Quinn Cleary for baseball; Maddy Tregenza for girls’ track; Dima Piskun for boys’ track; and Matt Logue for sailing.

Andrew Parry and Rachel Smithie both won the 2018 Independent School League Excellence Awards.

“None of this could happen, of course, without the help of several important people. A huge shout out to Mr. (Jeff) Nadeau and Ms. (Wendy) Drysdale, Mr. (James) Moran, Ms. (Danielle) Fleming and Mrs. (Katie) Roberts for all of the work you do. Thank you, Mr. (John) Mackay for coordinating the afternoon program as a whole and Dr. (Alixe) Callen for supporting us all,” Horn said. “Thank you to the students who work in the athletic offices daily, our team managers, and the fitness crew for timing games. Most importantly, thank you to the coaching staff and athletes whose hours of hard work, commitment to the school, and growth has been instrumental to the athletic program.”
