Dear St. George’s Community,

We are incredibly excited to announce the appointment of Michael C. Wirtz as the 13th Head of St. George’s School.

This week, Mike was approved unanimously by the St. George’s Board of Trustees, following the unanimous recommendation of our Head of School Search Committee. He will assume his responsibilities on the Hilltop on July 1, 2023.

Mike, the Head of School at Hackley School in Tarrytown, New York, since 2016, has distinguished himself throughout his career as a thoughtful, community-oriented educator, active in all aspects of school life.

During his time at Hackley, Mike expanded educational opportunities for students, oversaw major campus improvements and worked to build a community where all students feel welcome. Prior to leading Hackley, he spent six years at St. Mark’s School where he served as Assistant Head of School/Dean of Faculty and led the school’s STEM education initiative. Before St. Mark’s, Mike taught for nine years at Concord Academy where he headed the science department and also served as a house parent, advisor and coach. In addition to his substantial experience in education, we are thrilled to report that Mike embodies the qualities many of you said you desired in our next leader.

As our search for a new head of school got underway last year, the Search Committee — comprised of trustees, parents, faculty and alumni — first sought comprehensive guidance from our entire community. Overwhelmingly, you told us you wanted an educator with a dynamic intellect who would build on the strong sense of community at St. George’s. We were encouraged to find someone with a keen appreciation for the school’s dedicated faculty and staff who are the heart of the boarding/day school experience. Community members also urged us to look for a leader who would bring a deep personal and professional commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion — and who would support our rigorous academic program, while continuing to innovate.

Mike immediately stood out among many highly qualified and exceptional candidates because he so well matched these qualities. Notably, Mike also brings with him a wealth of leadership experience particularly valuable to our vision for St. George’s. Among his many accomplishments at Hackley, Mike led an inclusive strategic-planning process, helped to craft a comprehensive fundraising campaign to support it, and oversaw numerous construction projects. These are skills and experiences ideally suited for the next leader of St. George’s. To learn more about Mike, please visit our webpage here. Among other things, you will discover that he started his professional career as a research scientist at Pfizer, loves to golf, and he and his wife Hilary have two children, Charlie and Frances. On the webpage, you will also find a video of today’s announcement of Mike’s appointment in Madeira Hall, at which Mike addressed the campus community.

Emerging from the celebration of our 125th anniversary, emboldened by the incredible support we have received for our strategic and campus plans, and thanks to the strong leadership of Alixe Callen over the last seven years, St. George’s is uniquely well prepared to build upon our long-standing strengths. In Mike, we have a leader who is equipped and eager to advance our academic program; elevate our work in diversity, equity, and inclusion; strengthen our commitment to access and affordability; and undertake the careful preservation and enhancement of our historic campus.

“Certainly, I knew of St. George’s by reputation, but as I dug into the materials, I grew more impressed with and more excited by the school and all that is happening,” Mike said. “The school’s size and its foundations as an Episcopal school are real strengths, both helping to foster a sense of community united in shared values.”

Indeed, when we welcome Mike and his family to the St. George’s community this summer, we are confident that they will find a school on the move — and that Mike is the right leader to steer us boldly toward all that is bright on our horizon.

Sincerely,

Meade B Thayer
