Program Director- Head CoachBen Greenfield teaches physics at St. George’s and serves as the head coach of the fall and spring sailing programs. In the classroom, Greenfield where he aims to inspire his students with hands-on experience through experimentation. His teachings stress the importance of approaching the material through its real-world application. Prior to his work at St. George’s, Greenfield completed his student teaching at Boston Latin School and taught at Rocky Hill School. Aside from his teaching, he’s an accomplished competitive sailor at the international level and an avid skier. Greenfield received his bachelor’s degree in secondary education with a concentration in physics from Boston University.

A native of Newport, RI, John is a 1980 graduate of St. George’s where he won two High School Fleet Racing National Championships (Mallory Trophy), winning his division each time. He went on to sail at Tulane University where he was twice an All American. He competed in the finals of the US Sailing Match Racing Championships (Prince of Wales), the US Sailing Keelboat Championships (Mallory) and the US Sailing Doublehanded Championships (Bemis). After college he focused on racing and coaching in small keelboats, winning World, National and Continental championships in the J/24, J/22 and J/35 classes.
For 30 years, John was an owner and President of J World Performance Sailing Schools overseeing their national operations as well as providing private race coaching to many domestic and international teams.
John is a US Sailing Instructor Trainer in several disciplines and an adjunct faculty member at the United States Naval Academy where he coaches in their Navy 26 keelboats. He is a retired commercial pilot and joined the St. George’s coaching staff in the Spring of 2022. -
Joakim Karlsen has been a professional coach since 2007, serving youth sailors across the United States and abroad. He has coached a wide variety of classes with his primary focus on Opti racing and high school sailing. He moved to the United States in 2010 from Norway and has been a member of the St. George's coaching staff since 2013. He is a US level 3 certified coach and is currently a member of the US Sailing Coach and Instructor Committee as well as the USODA Coaches Council.
