May 12, 2021 • E-news For Parents Only End-of-year major dates We've got a busy few weeks ahead as students prepare for final assessments and we get ready to celebrate the Class of 2021! We've just received the latest guidance from the State of Rhode Island regarding graduation, so families of sixth-formers should stay tuned for more details about Prize Day. The Student Life Office has planned an epic weekend of activities for our soon-to-be graduates. View the schedule for our final "major dates" here. National Latin Exam awards Thirteen Latin students earned recognition for their performance on this spring's National Latin Exam. Earning Cum Laude are Beginning Latin students Alex Wilkinson '24, Avril Cui '24, and Henry Powell '24; Intermediate Latin 2 student Sophia Carbone '22, and Advanced Latin Poetry student Mimi Jessop '21. Earning Magna Cum Laude are Mae Lial '24 (Beginning Latin), and John O'Brien '23 (Intermediate Latin 1). Earning the Maxima Cum Laude Silver Medals are Bric Ridder '24 (Beginning Latin), Ben Su '24 (Beginning Latin), and Bella Matarese '22 (Intermediate Latin 2). And earning the Summa Cum Laude Gold Medals are Lucia DiDomenico '24 (Beginning Latin), Parker Han '22 (Intermediate Latin 2), and Ajay Naik '21 (Intermediate Latin 2).
Congratulations to all – and special recognition to Parker Han (pictured bottom right), who earned a perfect score on his exam. This is only the fourth perfect score in the past 20 years at SG (he also claimed the third last year!) and he earned a special commendation from the National Latin Exam for his efforts. SG golf team takes trophy Congratulations to the varsity golf team, which won the Bishop Hendricken Invitational yesterday at Warwick Country Club! A special shout-out to sixth-former Peter Alofsin (pictured second from the left), who won the tournament outright with a 76 and victory on the third playoff hole. Student leadership election Student leadership candidates get their final chance to convince voters tonight as the top Prefect candidates deliver speeches and the top Honor Board candidates participate in a Q&A in Madeira Hall. Winners of both elections will be announced on May 14 and the Senior Prefect and Honor Board Chair will be announced at the leadership assembly on May 21. Spring brings Assembly outside The School Prefects — Henry Whitford, Will Eykyn, Riley Cochrane, Max White, and Makai Murray — hosted a second outdoor assembly for the entire school Friday, this one on Crocker Field. The whole community got a chance to see each other, hear announcements, and watch an old-fashioned egg toss. International students bond over brunch The St. George's Asian Affinity group hosted a get-together for international students on Sunday as a way to bond before summer. "Under normal circumstances, international students would meet fairly often outside of classes," SGAA heads Min Lee '23 and Chloe Chisholm '23 wrote in their invitation. "However, the pandemic has kept us from our usual Lunar New Year parties, Sea Shai outings, and more. We hope this Sunday is a chance for international students across forms to spend time together before the school year ends." A good time (and meal!) was had by all. Football players and coaches discuss DEI The New England Prep School Football Coaches Association's diversity, equity, and inclusion forum featured 15 panelists and had more than 30 attendees last week, with our own coach John Mackay and Malachi Bodden '23 attending virtually. News from our classrooms Students in teacher Sarah Mongan's U.S. History class were discussing the Cuban Missile Crisis today and the ways that the United States' international relations changed around the Vietnam War — exploring the fallout of the Cold War and Fidel Castro's rise to power. Documenting their pandemic experience Nine students participated in the COVID Art & Remembrance Project and their work is now featured in a gallery online. The project is a partnership between the Holliston (Mass.) Youth and Family Services department and Self Esteem through Art, led by our own Jennifer Pipe, an artist and faculty family member. "I asked the students to make art that illustrated an aspect of 'COVID living' for them," said Mrs. Pipe, who led the students in an art-focused winter afternoon activity. "What did they do? Who did they rely on? How did they navigate the uncertainty? How was their life impacted directly? What will they remember?"
View the results here (the SG students' work begins toward the bottom of the page with the piece titled "Mended with Love,") — and learn more about the COVID Art & Remembrance Project here.
