Nov. 18, 2020 • E-news For Parents Only U.S. bishop offers special address to St. George's As part of our Beloved Community Initiative, the community virtually welcomed a very special guest to our chapel service on Monday: The Most Rev. Michael Bruce Curry, Presiding Bishop and Primate of The Episcopal Church. Bishop Curry, a highly regarded social justice advocate who delivered a spirited sermon at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding, and who presided over President George H.W. Bush's funeral, shared his thoughts about the power of love and unselfishness. The Rt. Rev. W. Nicholas Knisely, a member of the St. George's Board of Trustees, introduced Bishop Curry and Senior Prefect Makai Murray '21 moderated a Q&A session based on student questions submitted before the talk. Sure we're leaving campus a bit earlier this year, but before students depart for Thanksgiving Break Saturday, we wanted to give our seniors a taste of the holiday spirit and traditions they've come to love. On Sunday, we held our Senior Chapel, with a Christmas Festival theme, and a special dinner in King Hall for sixth-formers. Photos from the event are here. Feed-a-Friend Dress Down Day The Community Outreach Club – led by Mimi Jessop '21, Cordelia Scott '21, Olivia Quinn '21, Nikhil Sharma '21, Tharaly Joseph '22, and Grace Tatirosian '22 – raised nearly $500 during Monday's Dress Down Day in support of the school's annual Feed-a-Friend Food Drive to support the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center in Newport during the holiday season. With COVID safety regulations in place, students this year are unable to collect donations from local homes and instead created a postcard to get the word out through a mailing, asking our Middletown neighbors to bring nonperishable food items directly to the center. Last on campus weekend of the year Whether it was games on the turf or a virtual Middlesex Weekend of competitive video games, the last in-person weekend on the Hilltop of 2020 was another fun one. Free tacos, fire pits, movies, and candy-cane deliveries rounded out another great time organized by the Entertainment Committee and the prefects. You can see more in this week's SLO Down. Music rehearsal Our Dragon vocalists have been getting their rehearsal time in before leaving for break as they prepare for the virtual Lessons & Carols event on Dec. 3 and a virtual Holiday Music Chapel on Dec. 8. Stay tuned for links to these cherished seasonal performances! From the College Counseling Office Fifth-form parents were recently sent a push page with all of the recordings of our Fifth-Form Parent Webinar Series. If you weren't able to attend the sessions, we encourage you to watch these recordings here. News from the classroom Classrooms will be quiet for a bit. It's the last week of in-person learning on the Hilltop in 2020 before students depart for Thanksgiving break. There will be a brief period of remote learning before Winter Break begins and students return to campus in 2021, pending local health and safety guidelines at that time.
