Feb. 19, 2020 • E-news For Parents Only Students share why they ♥️ SG Congratulations to the winners of our annual "I ♥️ SG" photo contest, which encourages students to submit photos of what they love about St. George's. Prefects chose the winners ahead of assembly on Valentine's Day. Julia Cullivan '21 won the best overall photo (pictured above) with "I ♥️ waking up to an ocean sunrise every morning." Rocco Pace '22 won the spirit category with his photo "I ♥️ the lads." Lily Connell '20 won the community category with her "I ♥️ MX Weekends" photo. Athletic News Boys' varsity basketball continues hot streak The boys' varsity basketball is on a 15-game win streak and improved to a 18-3 record this weekend after facing off against Pomfret on Friday, winning 66-60 in overtime and then defeating Roxbury Latin the next day, 62-52. Dragon nets 1,000th point Congratulations to girls' varsity basketball player Chiron Rose '21 for scoring her 1,000th point in the team's game against Thayer Academy on Feb. 14. Overall, Chiron tallied 23 points on the day. Candygram sales raise money for nonprofits The Community Outreach Club delivered nearly 3,000 candygrams on Valentine's Day, raising approximately $1,000 for the Greenlove Foundation in honor of alumna Kendra Bowers '12 and $1,000 to World Connect in support of a Nigerian girls' conference focused on pathways to higher education and financial independence. Special shout-outs to the girls' varsity hockey, girls' JV hockey, and thirds squash teams, as well as students in the community service afternoon activity, and the Spanish Honor Society, who all helped to assemble and label candygrams! Almost curtain time for winter musical The world premiere of the Hilltop's upcoming winter musical "What Happens Monday" is next Saturday, Feb. 29! Actors, musicians, costume designers and stage crew members have all been hard at work on this one-of-a-kind show. The production features an original script and musical score created by the students and facilitated by Theater Director Sarah Ploskina and Music Director Dr. Kate Longo. Seating will be limited. Second Winter Geronimo trip returns Students aboard the second winter Geronimo trip returned to the Hilltop last night after just over two weeks of sailing in the Bahamas. The next student voyage will be during Spring Break when the Geronimo crew will further explore the Bahamas and Caribbean from March 6-13. News from our classrooms Teacher Cory Cramer's Maritime Literature classes visited the American Museum of the Sea at Mystic Seaport on Thursday where they explored the last remaining American whaleship, the Charles W. Morgan. Historian and Melville scholar Dr. Mary K. Bercaw-Edwards helped the students analyze first-hand the relationship between Melville's writing and the paintings of J.M.W. Turner.
