Feb. 12, 2020 • E-news For Parents Only Student artists recognized St. George's student artists had a great showing in this year's Rhode Island Scholastic Art Awards. Overall, 11 Dragons were recognized, including four — Daly Cheng '20, Ricky Lotuff '23, Mengxi Lu '22, and Ethan Smith '21 — who were awarded coveted Gold Keys, which automatically qualify them for the national competition. Daly, Christopher Elvin '22, Simon Li '20, Julia Talley '20, and Henry Welch '21 were awarded Silver Keys. And Nathan An '21, Madeline Carlson '22, Daly, Mengxi Lu '22, and Sion Park '20 received Honorable Mentions. See the full list of recipients and their submissions here. Guest speakers on the Hilltop • John Gustofson P'20, dad of Catherine Gustofson, delivered a Brown Bag Lunch talk to students this past Friday on "What to do with a science degree besides research," detailing in the biotechnology industry. Mr. Gustofson (pictured above in conversation with Jayden Dummett '20) is a managing director of AbbVie Ventures and invests across AbbVie's therapy areas of immunology, oncology, and neuroscience. • Sister Therese Antone, who's served as the president and now chancellor of Salve Regina University for 30 years, spoke to the Women in Leadership Club on Monday about strategic leadership. • Alex Myers, a writer, teacher, speaker, activist, and former SG faculty member, spoke about his experiences as the first transgender student in Phillips Exeter Academy's history during Monday's St. George's Student Experience program. Students score musical The upcoming winter musical "What Happens Monday" features not only an an original script, but an original music score as well, created by students and facilitated by Music Director Dr. Kate Longo. The musicians are Vincent Chen '22, Alex Wang '22, and Daniel Ziadie '20. You can even hear a bit of their work as you watch the teaser for the play here. The show opens on Saturday, Feb. 29. Athletic News • The SG girls' squash program ran a clinic with children from the RhodySquash program yesterday in the Hoopes Squash Center. • New England Recruiting Report released its 2020 rankings for Rhode Island, with varsity basketball player Tyler Kolek '20 in contention for the top spot and teammate Sam Adusei '20 not far behind. Professional musician lends insight Singer/songwriter Caroline Cotter (above right) visited the Hilltop yesterday to speak with Dr. Kate Longo's songwriting class and to perform an original song during our chapel service. After her closing duet with Dr. Longo, Ms. Cotter had lunch with some students and did a Q&A session in the Campus Center. You can watch her chapel performance here. Pink the Rink Will Perik '20 called it "tri-synergy." The combined efforts of the BBQ Club, S'mores Society, and Baking Club helped raise over $1,000 for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation at Saturday's Pink the Rink girls' varsity ice hockey game event. News from our classrooms Students in teacher Caitie Cotton's American Studies class spent some time last week analyzing and discussing primary sources for researching Teddy Roosevelt and foreign policy at the turn of the century. "Students use an online tool to collaboratively annotate sources before class to begin the discussion before they set foot in the classroom," Ms. Cotton said. Henry Welch '21 and Lydon Kelley '21 (pictured above with Ms. Cotton) are talking about the document before joining into the full group discussion.
