Students return from diversity leadership conference Students Chiron Rose '21, Tofunmi Olatubosun '21, Amolroop Hundal '21, Rhyan Pina '21, Alpha Barry '22, and Christopher Elvin '22 traveled to Seattle last week for this year's People of Color Conference and Student Diversity Leadership Conference. They were joined by Head of School Alixe Callen and faculty members Dr. Kim Bullock, Emmanuel Daring, the Rev. Dr. Jackie Kirby, Melanie Lewis, Randall Person, and Emma Bartnick on the trip. News from our classrooms Students enrolled in Latin courses took a trip to see Latin in action at Brown University's Latin Carol Celebration at the First Baptist Church in Providence on Monday. "As scholars of an ancient language, the students who take Latin at SG do not frequently have the opportunity to hear the language spoken aloud," Latin teacher Virginia Buckles said. "The Latin Carol Celebration is an opportunity for our students to do just that; they are able to hear the professors at Brown University speak in Latin, to sing in Latin themselves, and to engage with other students at both the high school and college level who share their passion for this ancient language." ISL School Heads recommit to sportsmanship creed Head of School Alixe Callen and her fellow ISL school leaders have co-signed a letter reaffirming their support for the long-held expectations of the Independent School League athletic conference. "We have discussed these expectations as a league this fall and are committed to ensuring that our communities strive at all times to live up to the high standards we have set for ourselves as members of the league," they write. Now they're asking players, coaches and fans to revisit the ISL Sportsmanship Creed. Read the full letter and the guidelines here. Students meet the artist at Hunter Gallery opening Art students and other community members attended the opening reception for the exhibit "Re.struc.ture" at the Hunter Gallery on Friday night, getting the chance to speak with the artist Jasjyot Singh. In his illustrations, Singh explores phases of strength and emotional tumult. A historic win for BVBB • St. George's boys' varsity basketball team became the first Rhode Island team since Feb. 13, 1997, to defeat St. Andrew's School in Barrington when it won its first game of the season 91-68 in the 2019 Zero Gravity Basketball Prep Classic finale. Players Tyler Kolek '20 scored 34 points and Sam Adusei '20 scored 32 points in the game. Guest speaker at chapel A special thank you to Salisbury School alumnus Daniel Amo for visiting the Hilltop to be Thursday's guest speaker at chapel. On Monday, St. George's hosted a Dress Down Day in support of Daniel's nonprofit GoldenEd, which supports school children in his home country of Ghana. Pie Race awards Annual Pie Race coordinator and math teacher Doug Lewis presented this year's Pie Race winners with their prizes at Monday's assembly.
