Nov. 20, 2019 • E-news For Parents Only A memorable 61st Annual Pie Race Students, teachers, staff members, and faculty children all turned out on Sunday for a fabulous 61st annual Pie Race — one of St. George's most memorable, longstanding traditions. Congratulations goes to William Wilson '21, who finished the 1.1-mile Hilltop course first with a time of 6:09. William was closely pursued by Luke Roosa '20, Jonathan Cajamarca '23, and Oscar King '22, all of whom finished the 1.1-mile race in under 6:30, and Thalia Mancini '21, this year's top female finisher. Rounding out the participants were runners in tutus, onesie pajamas, and Hawaiian shirts. This year's race had two special guests who were both present at the very first Pie Race back in 1959. John McLeran '60, who won that race, donned his running gear for this year's race and finished in a very respectable 27th place. And Shirley Hersey, wife of former physics teacher and Pie Race founder Ted Hersey — and baker of hundreds of prized pies over the years — was on hand to cheer on all the participants. Approximately 20 pies, now baked by our dining service, Sage, will be awarded at a school assembly when students return from Thanksgiving Break. For a photo gallery of the race, click here. Liam played at Loomis Chaffee and Julia played at Deerfield Academy. Julia (pictured above on the far right with other ISL players) scored the first goal of the game in her matchup and had two assists in a 5-3 win! In addition to families and NEPSAC coaches, more than 20 college coaches were watching the games from the sidelines, including representatives from Boston University, Trinity College, Colby College, Fairfield University, Hamilton College, Connecticut College, Wheaton College, Wesleyan University, and Clarkson University. In between taking their exams, students can be found studying all over campus, especially the Nathaniel P. Hill Memorial Library. To help alleviate some of the stress that comes with major assessments, faculty and staff have set up "Wellness Spots" around campus, including singing Christmas carols, quiet meditation, an origami table, a coloring and puzzle station, an encouragement wall, study snacks like Ma's Donuts, and even a puppy hour. Pictured above, art teacher Lisa Hansel offered "Drop in Yoga" today for some students to relax in between their tests. Beloved Community kickoff On Thursday, the Rev. Dr. Jackie Kirby introduced this year's Beloved Community Initiative, a series of chapel talks that will focus on coeducation at St. George's and the experience of LGBTQ+ students. Our first speaker will be Dean of Faculty and Staff Elizabeth Bickford on Jan. 9, 2020. Ms. Bickford was one of the first female students to attend Middlesex School. In case you missed 'the magic' Described by the producers as "Harry Potter meets The Office," our latest school video tells the story of a delegation of exchange students from the wizarding world recounting their experience at St. George's. And magical it was! Check out our video collaboration with The Film Guys on our YouTube channel here. School program applications • The Universal Promise Spring Break trip is March 7-19, 2020.
