Oct. 9, 2019 • E-news For Parents Only Community comes together for Family Weekend It was great welcoming families to the Hilltop last weekend! From the King Hall dinner and Music Showcase on Friday night to the class visits and home athletics games on Saturday, Family Weekend visitors truly got the chance to see the campus full of community spirit and Dragon Pride. News from our classrooms The Merck Center for Teaching announced the first of three featured "Active Learning Days" to take place over the year to showcase the hands-on learning taking place in our classrooms. There will be one Active Learning Day each trimester, with the first one set for next Tuesday, Oct. 15, followed by Feb. 4, and April 28. All classes will be open to visitors. Dragon named ISL Player of the Week Congrats to Makai Murray '21 on being named an ISL Player of the Week by both the Boston Globe and the Boston Herald! Makai threw for 170 yards with three touchdown passes and had a 67-yard rushing TD in the Dragons' Family Weekend 28-14 victory over Rivers School on Saturday. Film Guys on campus A crew from Netherlands-based company The Film Guys is on campus and will be filming for two weeks. They'll get to know the community and will be working with students and faculty to produce a special video to highlight St. George's. Stay tuned for more info! Students inducted into Language Honor Societies Thirty-one students were inducted into foreign language honor societies during an Oct. 3 ceremony in the Main Common Room. Seventeen students were inducted into the Spanish Honor Society, 10 students were inducted into the French Honor Society, three students were inducted into the Latin Honor Society, and one student was inducted into the Chinese Honor Society. View the full list of inductees here. Red & White subscriptions now available! The Red & White offers subscriptions in an effort to expand the newspaper's circulation and impact. Proceeds from subscriptions are used to supplement printing costs, purchase computers for layout, and to help fund staff meetings and mailings. If you would like to be mailed a copy of each edition of the Red & White for the 2019-20 school year, subscribe online here before Friday, Nov. 15. Feed-a-Friend Needs Local Drivers Student volunteers will canvass neighborhoods to collect canned items and dry goods for the 36th Annual Feed-a-Friend Food Drive on Sunday, Oct. 27, and they need local parents' help! Drivers are needed to help us gather food donations for the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center's food pantry in Newport. The food drive enables the center to make nearly 200 Thanksgiving and holiday baskets to be distributed during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season. To sign up, click here. Our beautiful backyard Director of Student Activities Ed McGinnis took students on a hike through Norman Bird Sanctuary to Hanging Rock on Monday. From the iconic local perch, students were able to look out on Sachuest Bay and the ocean beyond, even spotting a familiar Hilltop on the horizon. College reps on the Hilltop This week, representatives from the following schools will be on campus to meet with sixth-formers: Bates College, Colgate University, College of Wooster, Curry College, Denison University, Drexel University, Hamilton College, High Point University, Miami University-Ohio, Middlebury College, St. Mary's College Maryland, University of New Haven, University of Richmond, University of San Francisco, and the University of Southern California. Reminders • Our first SG Today Program of the year is this Friday, Oct. 11 — and you can help us spread the word! As many of you know from experience, our Today programs are one of the first chances for admission candidates and their families to explore St. George's. The programs run from 8 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Interested families may RSVP here or by calling the Admission Office at 401-842-6600.
