John Mackay is the dean of special projects, a history teacher, head varsity football coach and JV boys’ lacrosse coach. Hired in 1997, Mackay was director of athletics from 1997-2016. Prior to St. George’s he was on the faculty at the Peddie School, Avon Old Farms, Albuquerque Academy and Winchendon School. He has taught advanced European history for the past 18 years and has also taught the western civilization course. His teaching and coaching philosophy includes motivation, organization and enthusiasm. He greatly enjoys working with young people and is particularly proud of the number of former students who’ve entered the education field. He was named Boston Herald ISL Football Coach of the Year in 2015 when the SG squad completed an historic 9-0 league and New England championship season. Mackay holds a bachelor’s degree from Hamilton College and is an active member of the New England Prep School Athletic Council (NEPSAC)’s executive board, as well as an officer of the NEPSAC Football Coaches’ Association.
QB- Secondary CoachJoe Lang is the Director of the Horton Center for Learning and holds the Beth Horton Teaching Chair in Instructional Services. In these roles, his responsibilities include heading the Instructional Services department, which allows students, parents and advisors the opportunity to schedule one-on-one meeting times to help individual students achieve self-sufficiency through Executive Function skill-building, specific study skill-building, anticipation, communication, and self-assessment. In the Horton Center for Learning, Joe, along with colleague Sarah Mason, is tasked with creating and implementing student support programs meant to reach the entire Student Community, from third-formers to sixth-formers. Joe holds a B.A in History from the University of Connecticut, coaches Varsity Football and Varsity Boys' Tennis at St. Georges and lives in Arden Dorm with his wife, SG French Teacher Julie Lang and young son, Louie.
Defensive Line Coach
Assistant CoachAnthony Franco joined St. George’s School in July 2017. He brings with him counseling experi- ence from both independent and public school systems. No stranger to Rhode Island, Anthony graduated from Providence College where he earned his B.A. in Political Science. Before coming to the hilltop he spent eight years working in California schools, holding a myriad of different positions, including junior/senior dormitory head, programming committee chairperson and head baseball coach at The Thacher School in Ojai; an events coordinator and assistant football coach at Francis Parker School in San Diego. Lastly, Anthony was a college counselor for the California Student Opportunity and Access Program, a state-funded, non-profit that works specifically with first-generation, college-bound students at local public high schools. Anthony holds an M.A. in Higher Education Leadership with a specialization in Counseling from the University of San Diego. He currently resides in Eccles Dormitory, teaches in the History department, and coaches varsity football and baseball.
Assistant CoachJustin Sellar is a fellow in the Athletic Department. A May 2017 graduate of Wheaton College, Justin is pursuing his master's degree in sports management with a concentration in athletic administration from Southern New Hampshire University. In addition to his work in the athletic office, Justin coaches football and hockey. He joined the faculty in 2018.
