Coaches

  • Head Coach

    Doug Lewis is the holder of the Edmund P. Coe Chair in Mathematics at St. George’s. Since arriving on the Hilltop in 1995, Lewis has served as the chair of the mathematics department, as assistant director of studies and as a member of the school’s Honor Board. He has coached basketball, baseball and softball, and has worked as an advisor and dorm parent. Lewis received a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Princeton University and a master’s degree in educational technology from Johns Hopkins. A former master teacher with the Woodrow Wilson Foundation, he has given presentations on mathematics at the local, state, regional and national level. He has a particular interest in finding effective ways to use technology to support classroom learning.

  • Assistant Coach

    Jeffrey E. Simpson arrived at St. George’s in 1982. He received his bachelor’s degree in English and philosophy from Connecticut College and his master’s degree and Ph.D. in American Civilization from Brown University. He was named Teacher-Scholar of Rhode Island by the National Endowment for the Humanities in 1990, which funded a year of independent research. Simpson served as English department chair for five years and holds the John L. Welsh ’42 Teaching Chair in English. He currently teaches American studies and advanced English, serves as faculty advisor to the school’s literary magazine, The Dragon, and coaches girls’ cross-country and thirds boys’ basketball.
