The Dragons traveled to Middlesex to play their last regular season game this past Saturday. From the opening tip, the atmosphere at MX reflected the level of competition one would expect from a rivalry game. The Dragons proved ready for a dog fight, however, battling their way to an early 12 point lead in the first 16 minutes the game. With a game score of 23-11, MX relied on their defense to claw their way back into competition; the scrappy squad forced SG into a significant amount of turnovers, which helped erase much of the early deficit. Middlesex senior guard, Julian Howell 19’, lead the charge on the offensive end, contributing 10 points. At the half, SG held a narrow 31-27 lead.
After an impassioned half time speech, SG came out with renewed energy. Determined to ruin SG’s playoff hopes, MX stood toe-to-toe with the Dragons, refusing to back down from the challenge. Thus, the second half was a tale of lead changes, as both teams landed knockout blow after knockout blow. Late in the game, Dominic Mello ‘21 stepped up for his team by securing a gutsy, but paramount steal, which gave SG another crucial possession to extend the lead. In the end, gritty team defense and spectacular play by Tyler Kolek ’20 who had 29 points, proved too much for MX. Our boys will carry their energy and competitive spirit into a playoff berth next week against Brooks on Feb. 27.
