Our Dragons played an intense game Saturday afternoon against Groton. Groton’s tight defense allowed them to be up 31-26 at halftime. Our young Dragon team exploded offensively to open up a second-half lead of 60-44 before Groton came storming back. While sitting on a comfortable 67-57 lead with 45 seconds remaining, SG soon realized no lead was safe. After a Groton basket and a Dragons-made free throw, SG led 69-60 with 22 seconds left. On the next possession, Groton forward R. Stankard would make a deep three, making it a two possession game with 13 seconds left. Dominic Mello would get fouled on the next inbound situation and miss back-to-back free throws which led to another quick Groton three, SG led 69-66 with 3.5 seconds remaining. Sophomore guard Ethan Augusto would be fouled on the next ensuing inbound possession and miss two free throws, allowing Groton to hit a spectacular buzzer-beater three-pointer, forcing overtime. As impressive as the Dragons were in building their lead, their resiliency flourished more in the extra period where the Dragons outscored Groton 17-5 for an 86-74 victory. Fourth-former Dominic Mello 21’ scored 39 points, 27 of these were made in the second half. Our Dragons earned a well-deserved win to open our 2019 year.
