The Dragons kicked off the last week of their season at Thayer Academy for an ISL matchup on Wednesday afternoon. The team knew Thayer would be a tough matchup, as they won the ISL Tournament just this past weekend, but that did not change the Dragons’ outlook on the game. Peyton Mulhern ’19 won the opening draw and set the tone for her teammates. After a turnover on the first possession, the Dragons defense was put to the test early, but Lizzy Maimone ’19 came up with a big first save to keep the momentum on our side. After five minutes of back-and-forth, Thayer scored the first 2 goals of the day back-to-back. It didn’t take long for the Dragons to answer, as Riley Cochrane ’21 found Mulhern who put it away to cut Thayer’s lead in half. Thayer was successful on the fast break and took a 1-3 lead, but shortly after, Thalia Mancini ’21 found Cochrane to cut the deficit again. Katie George ’19 and Cochrane each took penalties that forced the defense to play two players down for a minute and a half. The defensive unit held tough and allowed only one Thayer goal. Mulhern won a critical draw for the Dragons to maintain possession and run down the penalties. After a few minutes of back and forth, the Dragons entered halftime down 3-7 against a strong Thayer team.

The offensive unit clicked in the second half, passing, cutting, and creating opportunities for each other. Cochrane got the scoring started quickly for the Dragons after an amazing one-handed catch to shot in the front of the net. Mulhern then intercepted a pass from the Thayer goalkeeper and took it to goal with speed and strength. Down by a handful early in the second half, the Dragons defense was put to the test again. Eliza Winsor ’21 helped shut off a strong Thayer attacker while the rest of the defense worked together to protect the middle of the field. The defense adjusted well to their coaches’ feedback and were able to help come up with turnovers on the defensive end. Liv Tilzey ’22 notched a goal midway through the second half to keep the Dragons in the game. Bailey Randall ’21, Cordelia Scott ’21, and Alafair Cutler ’20 were all helpful subs and saw significant time in the second half. After a late run by Thayer, the Dragons fell 7-18 to the ISL Tournament Champs.

Peyton Mulhern earned “Player of the Game” honors for being the team playmaker today. In addition to her 2 goals, 2 assists, and 2 ground balls, Peyton dominated on the draw and tallied 6 draw controls against a strong Thayer draw group. Cochrane tied Mulhern for a game-high 4 points on 3 goals and 1 assist, and the defensive unit came up with 4 ground balls. The Dragons return to the field Friday afternoon for their last game of the season against biggest rival Middlesex.
