Spiritual Life
As part of our mission to nurture faith and understanding, the school community gathers twice every week in the chapel. A major weekly service, following the order for worship in The Book of Common Prayer of the Episcopal Church, features an accomplished student choir, currently with eighty members. The Brass ensemble also plays on a regular basis contributing to the high quality of weekly musical offerings. The chaplains, faculty members, or guest speakers reflect on biblical passages, discuss issues that face our school or the wider world, or share experiences from their own spiritual or ethical journeys. Students participate in Chapel by reading lessons, saying prayers, and serving as acolytes or ushers. We also meet a second time each week during which we pray for those in need, sing a hymn and listen to VI Form students reflecting on issues that have impacted their lives.

Additional services held during the school year include Morning Prayer at Parents’ weekend, Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday, Holy Week and Easter Sunday services, when school is in session, an alumni weekend service, and services related to graduation.

The Chapel also hosts weddings, memorial services, baptisms, and a voluntary candle-lit service of meditation on Friday evenings called Compline. The most well-known services, however, may be those held in the Chapel as Christmas approaches, Lessons and Carols and The Christmas Festival. Our choir and school orchestras combine with readers, torch bearers, hand bell ringers, and many others who fill the chapel with the sounds and sights of this special season; a tradition now in its ninth decade.

Outside of the Chapel, a yearly voluntary program of spiritual formation is offered leading to confirmation in the Episcopal Church at an all school service celebrated by the Bishop of Rhode Island.

The school provides transportation for students who wish to attend local churches on Sundays, and offers to provide or find transportation for those who wish to attend services at synagogues, mosques, or temples.
