Greetings from the Hilltop!

The Hilltop is teeming with activity again! Tuesday was move-in day for our new boarding students and registration day for our new day students. Returning boarding students moved back in on Wednesday (right) — and all students kicked off their fall afternoon-activity program Wednesday afternoon.

Convocation was held in the chapel yesterday morning, marking the official beginning of the 2016-17 school year. Dozens of students were recognized for their exceptional academic performance this past spring: Thirty-three students earned Head of School Commendations for receiving no grade lower than an A- in the last trimester — and prizes were awarded to 11 students, detailed here. In addition, Senior Prefect Eva Killenberg ’17 was inducted into the prestigious Cum Laude Society.

Director of Alumni Relations Bill Douglas notes we have an alumni connection with yesterday’s 50th anniversary of the first episode of “Star Trek.” Harry Werksman ’83 (right) co-wrote the story of the “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” sixth season episode titled, "The Reckoning” (1998). He also co-wrote the documentaries, “William Shatner's Star Trek Memories” (1995) and “Star Trek: A Captain’s Log” (1994). Harry is perhaps best known for his role as a writer and producer on the popular series “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Ugly Betty.” A big ’ol Vulcan salute to Harry!

Art Department Chair Mike Hansel ’76, P’10, ’20 won first place in the 30th Rosen Outdoor Sculpture Competition & Exhibition held this summer at Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C. Find out more about Mike and his winning work, “Intestinal Fortitude” here.

Congratulations to David Mitchell ’00, who knew that former science teacher and now faculty emeritus Mike Ryan worked as a corporate chemist before joining us on the Hilltop from 1991-2004.

This week’s trivia question: Like Harry, several of our alumni have gone on to work in the theater and television fields. Which of our talented alums played Ragueneau in the Roundabout Theatre Company’s Broadway production of “Cyrano de Bergerac” in 2014? The first to respond with the correct answer wins a coupon code for $10 off a purchase from the St. George's bookstore.
