Joe Lang is the director of instructional services and holds the Beth Horton Teaching Chair in Instructional Services, as well as an athletic coach. Lang’s responsibilities in the instructional services department center around student development through goal-setting, executive function, skill-building, specific study-skill training, expectation-leveling and communication. In a one-on-one setting, students are challenged to learn more about themselves and are asked to demonstrate an openness to the idea of “learning to learn.” Communication with teachers is also a central component of Lang’s instruction. This enhances the student-experience and aids in creating a complete understanding of students under the instructional services umbrella. Helping to generate a strong level of self-sufficiency in each student is Lang’s ultimate goal and the goal of the department, collectively. Lang coaches varsity football and is the head coach of the boys' varsity tennis team, having extensive work experience, both at the junior academy level and coordinating a high-level competition program, at the private club level. A graduate of Middlesex School, he is a member of that school’s Athletic Hall of Fame. Lang holds a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Connecticut, where he was a senior captain of the men’s tennis team and four-year letter-winner.
