Planned Giving

Countless generations of donors have helped to sustain the traditions that define the St. George’s experience. Planned gifts are an essential part of the school’s long-term financial future and over time have helped to shape the St. George’s of today.

In addition to taking full advantage of the personal benefits you can realize now with planned giving; including valuable tax benefits, augmented income for you and another beneficiary, diversifying your investments and even the possibility of making a larger gift than would otherwise be possible, you can create a legacy for the future.

Planned Giving Options

Always consult with your attorney to determine the best way to document your gift intentions. A variety of planned gift instruments exist but in general there are two primary ways to include St. George’s School in your estate plans:

In a will or revocable trust.

Sample language –

For an unrestricted gift to be used where there is the greatest need or for its general purposes:

“I [name], of [city/town, state, zip], give, devise and bequeath to St. George’s School, a not-for-profit corporation located in Middletown, Rhode Island, (“St. George’s”) the sum of $_______ [or _____% of my residuary estate] to be used for its unrestricted use and purpose.”

To allocate your bequest to a particular purpose:

“I give, devise and bequeath to St. George’s School, a not-for-profit corporation located in Middletown, Rhode Island, (“St. George’s”) the sum of $_______ [or _____% of my residuary estate] to be used for . . .

- endowed scholarships for students…[or] boarding students at St. George’s School…[or] day students at St. George’s School…

- faculty support… [or] an endowed teaching chair in… [or] chapel preservation… [or] athletics…

The above examples do not encompass all of the programs or gift opportunities at St. George’s. Please contact the Alumni//Development Office to discuss your interests further.

Naming St. George’s as a beneficiary of your IRA or other retirement plan.

Contributions to your retirement plan are made on a pre-tax basis so when withdrawals are made by you or your heirs taxes are due. One way to spare your heirs of this expense is to leave taxable assets such as IRAs and 401(k) or 403(b) plans to a charitable beneficiary and non-taxable items such as cash, investments, or real property to individual beneficiaries. Because St. George’s is a non-profit entity funds left to the school are tax-exempt.

Contact your retirement plan administrator for the proper beneficiary designation form. You will also need the school’s address and tax identification number (TIN), also referred to as an employer identification number (EIN).

Ogden Nash Society

Individuals who include the school in their estate plans become members of St. George’s Ogden Nash Society, named for one of our most famous alumni, Class of 1920.

Members of the Ogden Nash Society

The Ogden Nash Society recognizes and honors those alumni, parents and friends who have made special provisions to support the school in their estate plans. Members of the Society receive certain benefits, which currently include: recognition in school publications; invitation to the annual Ogden Nash Society Breakfast held during Alumni Weekend in May; and access to professional, personalized gift planning services.

If you have already named St. George’s as a beneficiary of a bequest or other planned gift, please let us know so that we may properly welcome you as a member of the Ogden Nash Society. If you would like to be included in this distinguished group, please contact the Advancement Office at 1-888-422-5574.
