Summer Programs

SUMMER GERONIMO On all of our trips, we focus on teaching sailing and navigation skills as well as Marine Science. The students are fully engaged in a unique experiential program on board a 70' ocean-going Sailing School Vessel. Students stand watch, navigate, perform sail maneuvers, steer, cook and clean, as they progressively take on more responsibility over the course of their voyage. While on board, the participants work with an experienced team of professional sailors and teachers exploring the waters between the New England and the Chesapeake Bay.

Cruise #1:  June 10 to July 7, 2012 - Geronimo's summer voyage of 2012 is open to students currently enrolled at St. George's. The participants will sail from Newport, RI and explore the North Western Atlantic and coastal waters. The trip will end in Gloucester, MA. During the four week course on board GERONIMO, students will be taught a survey course in Oceanography which will include the following topics: Marine Biology, Marine Geology, Meteorology, Navigation and Seamanship. (one berth still available).

New Dragons Sail on GERONIMO

The Sea Legs Program will allow incoming new students to get to know a bit of SG culture prior to the start of school by embarking on one of three seven-day adventure cruises aboard the school’s 69-foot sail training vessel.

Sea Legs provides a platform for new students to meet and interact before arriving on campus. “It will allow them to have an experiential learning opportunity,” Jim Hamilton, Head of Admissions said, “and a head start on getting to know some kids who will be going to school with them in the fall.”

And the program will heighten students’ interest in applying to one of the existing academic-based Geronimo cruises offered during their school years.  “They’ll get terrific insight into the Geronimo program,” Hamilton said, “and they might feel it will be the right thing to add to their curriculum.”
